A friend's copy of the January Harpers Magazine had an interesting article by Ursula K Le Guin "Notes on the Alleged Decline of Reading". I'm always interested in anything written by Le Guin. I laughed out loud when I got to Le Guin's questioning "the assumption that books are on their way out". She said "I think they're here to stay. It's just that not all that many people ever did read them. Why should we think everybody ought to now?" It's a broad-ranging essay that is as much of a commentary on the politics of publishing as it about books and readers. Here's a link to the article:
